My Name is Garry and I am a DSA Driving Instructor who is CRB checked and Fully Qualified. Please feel free to browse this site about myself; I have decided to create this site because when I get new pupils, I often wonder in advance of meeting them, what are they like? What will their needs be? What line of work will they be in? I then thought, that they must think about what sort of person I am, prior to meeting me on their first lesson. With that thought, this website could help them be less nervous by knowing about me before meeting me.

I was born in 1961 and lived in Kimberley in Nottinghamshire, I later moved to Codnor in Derbyshire in my teenage years and went to Aldercar School in Langley Mill.
In 1977 I joined the Army from boy service and did my basic training at Ouston in Newcastle upon Tyne. I joined the Royal Corps of Signals as a Combat Powerman. This trained me in operating generators and providing electricity to those whom required it.
I served two tours in Germany, each 3 years long, and a 3 year posting to the world famous, Royal Signals Motorbike Display Team, known as The White Helmets. This involved touring the world doing tricks on motorcycles from Small County shows up to events like, The Royal Tournament at Earls Court, London in front of HM the Queen.
In 1986 I left the forces and put my HGV licence to use in Civvy Street as a lorry driver on a Big NHS distribution contract. I worked my way up to Supervisor and took over the role as Transport Manager when required. I became a Driving Assessor on this contract, as well as a Manual Handling Trainer. This involved being out in cabs of lorries helping drivers correct faults that might have developed, or running classrooms teaching Manual Handling and Tachographs. In 2002 I decided to become a DSA Approved Driving Instructor, and I started my training with regrettably a company called Passmasters of Manchester. I passed my exams and became an ADI. In 2004 I joined a National School of Motoring Company until Jan 2009.
I feel that I am a pleasant, polite, and patient Instructor, who tries to give pupils value for money. I try to present myself in a smart appearance, and I try to present a very clean, new car for learning in. (weather permitting) I try to encourage a happy relaxed atmosphere in the car where learning can take place. As a LGV and Car driver, plus a Motorcyclist, I can offer a wealth of knowledge on driving, and as an Approved Driving Instructor, I can help teach how to drive safe for the rest of your life. I am also an Advance Driver with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Only a fully-qualified Approved Driving Instructor will have a green badge.
The DSA gives a Green Badge to Instructors who pass all three of their exams. Trainee Instructors are given a pink badge and have not passed the 3rd part of the required exams.
While Instructors with a pink badge are legal, be aware that they are still training to become fully qualified, and if they fail part 3, they may never qualify fully.
If your instructor doesn’t have one of these badges in the windscreen, ask why. If you’re not satisfied, don’t take lessons with that person!
