The Show Me/Tell Me questions

I will list the Show Me questions first, then the Tell Me,  The question will be in Green, the answer in Black

1/   Show Me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working. Gentle pressure pulling down on the steering wheel whilst the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.

2/   Show Me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear. Keep safe control of the vehicle.

Apply the foot brake firmly. Demonstrate by applying the parking brake so that when it is fully applied, It secures itself and is not at the end of the working travel.

3/   Show me how you would check that the horn is working on this vehicle (off road only)

Identify where the horn is, Check is carried out by pressing the horn

4/   Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Operate the indicators or hazard warning lights and check the functioning of all the indicator lights.

5/   Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this vehicle.

Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or garage doors ect, or ask someone to help. The examiner will offer to help with this. You will need to switch the ignition on to answer this question, but do not start the vehicle.

6/   Show me how you clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.

Operate the control to wash and wipe the windscreen. You will need to turn the ignition lights on but do not start the engine.

7/   Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

Set all relevant controls including : Fan, Temperature, and Air direction source, and heated screen to clear the windscreen and windows effectively.

8/   Show Me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s), and explain when you would use them/it

Operate the switch  (turn on ignition and dipped headlights) Check the warning light is on. Explain that you would use them when visibility is seriously reduced (less than 100m)

9/   Show Me how you would  switch your headlights from dipped beam to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the vehicle.

Operate the switch, with the ignition on and check the blue warning light is illuminated.

—————————————————————————————————————-

1/   Open the bonnet and identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is, and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.

Identify the reservoir and explain how to check the level

2/   Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level, and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify the dipstick, explain you would take it out, wipe it, put it back in, take it out again and check against the high/low markings.

3/   Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level. Tell me how you would top up the coolant level.

Identify the high/low level markings on the header tank, top up when cold as the system is pressurised.

4/   Open the bonnet and identify the brake fluid reservoir, and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of brake fluid.

Identify the reservoir, and check level against high/low markings. Take to a dealer to top up.

Explain that you would operate the switch and walk around the vehicle to check.

7/   Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this vehicle and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Refer to the manufacturers guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when the tyres are cold. Don’t forget to check the spare, and refit the valve caps.

8/  Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

There should be no cuts or bulges in the tyre, and there must be at least 1.66mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

9/   Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best possible protection in the event of a crash.

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eyes, or the top of the ears, and is close to the back of the head as possible.
